Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana raised eyebrows on social media after his bizarre attempts to distract penalty takers during last night’s pre-season friendly shootout against Arsenal – and he was even shushed by Gabriel Magalhaes.
United lost their opening US pre-season tour game 2-1 after goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli despite Rasmus Hojlund opening the scoring in Los Angeles.
But there was a silver lining of sorts for Erik ten Hag‘s side after they triumphed in the pre-arranged shootout following the final whistle, Jadon Sancho coolly stroking home the decisive spot-kick to seal a 4-3 victory at the SoFi Stadium.
It was the charismatic Onana, however, that made the headlines for his energetic mind games as Arsenal’s takers stepped up from 12 yards.
The stopper saved Kai Havertz‘s effort to hand United the advantage but he was unable to pull off similar heroics to deny centre back Gabriel.

In a clip that has since been seen by almost 400,000 viewers on X, formerly Twitter, Onana looked to make the defender flub his lines by signalling which part of the goal he should aim at. He was then comically sent the wrong way.
Responding in brutal fashion after placing his effort in the direction Onana had pointed at, Gabriel scooped up the ball and told him to be quiet.
After conceding, a close-up camera shot showed the goalkeeper on his knees and gesticulating into thin air, visibly frustrated that his stunt had backfired.
Unsurprisingly, supporters used the opportunity to brutally mock Onana.
‘Andre Onana is not serious,’ one United fan said on X.

An Arsenal account added: ‘For someone that shipped in 60+ goals last season, Andre Onana has shame and should keep his mouth shut.’
Another posted: ‘Coward Andre Onana didn’t wanna turn around to face Gabriel.’
A fourth account shared a screenshot of Onana’s gesture to the left-hand side of his goal alongside the simple caption, ‘Andre Onana every match’.
United striker Hojlund and new £52million signing Leny Yoro both suffered first-half injuries and boss Ten Hag admitted he was unsure on their condition.
‘We have to wait 24 hours and then we will hopefully know more,’ Ten Hag told MUTV. ‘We were very careful, especially with Leny.
‘It is disappointing he had to come off but let’s be positive and see what comes out.’
