Brazil beat Paraguay 4-1 after a goalless draw with Costa Rica in the opener. Both teams had attacking chances in the first 30 minutes, but no goals were scored.
Brazil was granted a penalty in the 29th minute after the Paraguay defender played the ball with his hand in the penalty area. Lucas Paqueta missed the chance by shooting over the crossbar.
Brazil scored their first goal of the competition two minutes later as Vinicius Jr. finished a penalty.
Brazil added two more goals late in the first half. After the Paraguay custodian saved, Savio kicked into an empty net in the 43rd minute. After a mistake by the Paraguay defence, Vinicius Jr. scored his second goal of the game seconds before halftime to put Brazil up 3-0.
Alderete, who made a mistake in the first half, hit a fantastic long-range shot to cut the score to 1-3 in the second half. Brazil’s second penalty in the 63rd minute dashed Paraguay’s hopes. Brazil went up 4-1 when Paqueta coldly took down the opponent’s custodian.
