In the second game of Group E – EURO 2024 on June 21, the Ukrainian squad pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Slovakia 2 – 1.
Slovakia came into the match with high spirits following their 1-0 victory over Belgium in the first round, and they knew that a win over Ukraine would open up many doors for them to proceed. On the other side of the front line, despite their superior ranking, Ukraine was forced to defeat Slovakia in order to maintain their prospects of progressing after they were humiliatingly defeated by Romania in the first game.
Because of this, the Ukrainian team got off to a tight start, letting Slovakia fully push the field. In the 19th minute, Ivan Schranz headed strongly into the penalty area to give Slovakia the lead when Ukraine’s defence appeared distracted.
Ukraine was in a tie at the end of the first half, but in the second half, this team totally changed, and the Slovakian players were tired. In the 54th minute, Oleksandr Zinchenko scored a fast attack from the left wing, setting up Mykola Shaparenko to finish in the penalty box and tie the score at one for Ukraine.
Ukraine rushed the pitch in excitement, and Roman Yaremchuk skillfully scored a two-to-one triumph for his country. In the evening of June 21, Slovakia’s efforts were insufficient to secure a draw at the Dusseldorf Arena.
Both Slovakia and Ukraine earned three points from their first two Group E – EURO 2024 matches, maintaining their hopes of making it to the 1/8 round. Slovakia plays Romania in the championship match, while Ukraine plays Belgium.
