Berlin (AP)— Toni Kroos is focused on this summer’s European Championship.

Real Madrid star, 34, was enticed out of international retirement to represent Germany at its home tournament, but he doesn’t know what will happen next season.

Kroos has yet to renew his contract with the Spanish league leader, but he wants to end his career on a high at Euro 2024 after winning the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and every domestic trophy with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“Many things are uncertain after the European Championship,” Kroos said Tuesday about playing for Germany after the competition.

I have no contract for next season. So it’s hard. I need to clarify before… I doubt I could return from full retirement.”

Last week, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann revealed he had many talks with Kroos to return. Kroos had not played for Germany since losing to England in the second round of the last European Championship.

Kroos joked he required approval to return with his granddad.

“I had to convince him because without his OK nothing would have happened,” Kroos stated. No, he knew what I was thinking and said he would rather have another year with Real and then holiday. I assured him I’d play the Euro anyway, and he’s fine—he ordered his Germany jersey.”

Kroos’ control and calmness should aid his teammates after his return.

Recent form suggests Germany is disorganised. It lost its previous two games to Austria and Turkey and won only twice against the US and France in its last 10. Six lost.

Nagelsmann replaced Hansi Flick to revive the team before Euro 2024, but he has failed to restore faith.

Next, Germany plays France in Lyon on Saturday and the Netherlands in Frankfurt on Tuesday. Final warmup games will be against Ukrаine and Greece.

Kroos acknowledged Germany’s bad record but believed further international appearances could help the team recover in time for the tournament.

“It’s a bit presumptuous now to sаy it will only be a success if we win the title,” Kroos remarked. “We’re coming from a time when that’s hard to formulate, but you can’t get that from me. You believe you can succeed like that.”

Leaving group stage is a start.

“For sure, I’d like to participate in one or two rounds in the knockout stage,” Kroos added.

Germany plays Scotland in Munich on June 14, Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19, and Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23.
