Many Manchester United players are hesitant to send the ball to Rasmus Hojlund because they are still not convinced by him.
Hojlund, who paid £72 million to join United from Atalanta in July, has not played a full game since the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry on April 21. Since returning from ιnjury in March, he has only scored once in ten games.
A United player confided in a confidant that because of Hojlund’s poor play in front of goal, some players are looking for different ways to score in the last third. In their last three games, United has only managed one goal.
Hojlund just had 14 ball possessions during Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal. Against Crystal Palace, he had 26 sequences with the ball, but only 11 against Burnley and 17 against Sheffield United—the latter of which resulted in his first goal since February.
Amidst Hojlund’s Premier League drought, the Manchester Evening News disclosed in December that some United players harbored misgivings about him. Hojlund’s goal on Boxing Day gave him his first league goal in the victory over Aston Villa.
On his full debut in September against Brighton, Hojlund was disallowed a goal by the Video Assistant Referee who determined that Marcus Rashford had dribbled the ball out of play.
This season, Hojlund’s inability to provide support for Rashford has led to several arguments between the two players.
After United chose not to pursue Harry Kane, manager Erik ten Hag’s top striker target, they acquired Hojlund. After spending £86.4 million to join Bayern Munich, Kane has scored 44 goals in Germany, which is more than Hojlund has ever scored for the team this season.
Ten Hag acknowledged in private that signing Kane had “disadvantages” because of his propensity to dip deep. Hojlund was viewed as more of a focal point by United, who believed that might have had an impact on Bruno Fernandes’s role as captain.
Hojlund scored five goals in four games to win the Player of the Month award for February. On February 23, the day before United’s five-game winning streak came to an end with a 97th-minute loss to Fulham, he sustained an ιnjury.
On Monday morning, the Dane posted on Instagram, saying, “Hard times right now. However, this will help us grow.”
