Even winning the FA Cup, according to Bruno Fernandes, wouldn’t guarantee that Manchester United will have a great season.
The Red Devils’ victory over Coventry City, the Championship team, on Sunday was an incredible act of luck. In reality, they had taken a 3-0 lead, but Coventry mounted a stunning comeback to tie the score well into ιnjury time.
After extra time failed to produce a winner, United secured their spot in the championship game with a 4-2 victory on penalties. In his 120 minutes of action, Fernandes scored the third penalty for his team.
In a month, Erik ten Hag’s team will play Manchester City, their bitter rivals. However, Fernandes has mocked the idea that United should regard their Cup victory as a triumph.
“We couldn’t determine from the front whether their goal [in extra time] was offside, so we speculated after they scored. We should have killed it sooner because we put ourselves in a sticky situation, but we chose not to. We really need to improve,” he said to ITV Sport.
“If we win the FA Cup alone, we will never be successful. This club has far higher standards than we have been operating at. We need to do better in Europe, the League Cup, and the league. Of course, if we win the FA Cup, it will be a success. However, we are aware that our club encompasses much more.”
In addition to having to eke out a victory over a lower division team, United is now seventh in the Premier League standings, was eliminated from the Carabao Cup in the fourth round, and placed last in their Champions League group.
Harry Maguire, Fernandes’ teammate who also participated in the full 120 minutes of Sunday’s victory, had a marginally more optimistic view. Although he commended Coventry for their performance, the England international stated that his team had displayed “great character.”
“We managed to figure it out. We had a great start to the game and then let in a careless goal. It was sad that we let the second goal slip away. “I think Coventry deserves all the credit, but the penalty was too severe,” Maguire said on ITV.
In the second part of extra time, they put a lot of pressure on us. Our season is summed up by this: for sixty minutes, we played well and with excellent control, but we suԀԀenly conceded. Then, I don’t know, it looks like everyone was rooting for Coventry to succeed. We persevered with amazing spirit, and winning the shootout was crucial.”
