Dortmund suffered a 1-2 home loss to Atletico Madrid in the first leg. Given the identical strength of the two teams, a highly unpredictable return leg is anticipated.
The Champions League encounter at Signal Iduna Park is the real drаmа. By the end of the first half, Ian Maatsen (39th minute) and Julian Brandt (34th minute) had given Dortmund a 2-0 lead over Atletico Madrid. Dortmund presently leads the series 3-2 after two games, and the German team has plenty of opportunities to tie the score.
But Dortmund’s lead evaporated in the first twenty minutes of the second half alone. With an own goal in the 49th minute, midfielder Mats Hummels gave Atletico Madrid some hope of continuing by helping the away club cut the score to 1-2.
Atletico Madrid equalized at 2-2 thanks to two goals from close range in the 64th minute from Ángel Correa. After two games, the Spanish football representative is now up 4-3. Atletico Madrid now has a chance to advance from Dortmund.
The drаmа didn’t end there, though, as Dortmund scored two goals in a row to grab a 4-2 lead in just three minutes between goals 71 and 74. The renowned defense of Atletico Madrid played erratically and gave way easily.
Marcel Sabitzer was able to cross the ball too freely after Atletico Madrid players were unable to keep up with him on the left wing, allowing Dortmund to raise the score to 3-2 in the 71st minute. There was no Aletico Madrid midfielder there to exert pressure, giving Niclas Füllkrug ample room to leap high and score with a header.
Marcel Sabitzer found plenty of room to shoot an angled shot and score the fourth goal (minute 74) because Atletico Madrid’s defense did not pursue the ball forcefully enough. After an unfortunate 4-5 loss, Atletico Madrid ultimately fell 2-4 and was knocked out of the Champions League.
PSG, which also just overcame Barca, will be Dortmund’s opponent going into the semi-finals.
