Red Devils boss was angered by questions over whether he could yet oversee the club’s worst-ever Premier League campaign
An irate Erik ten Hag left his Bournemouth post-match press conference without responding to a question regarding Manchester United possibly having their worst Premier League finish ever this season.
The under-fire Dutch coach was speaking to the media following a controversial and unconvincing 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday night. His team needed two goals from captain Bruno Fernandes to salvage a point, and they also managed to avoid a last-minute penalty award in stoppage time in the second half after a clumsy challenge by Willy Kambwala on Ryan Christie, which VAR decided was outside the box and overturned.
Another dreadful showing from United—who allowed 20 more shots and are giving up more attempts on average than any other Premier League team this year—will not have allayed persistent rumors that Ten Hag may not have a long future at Old Trafford, where football operations are now overseen by new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
After Eddie Howe’s team defeated Champions League-chasing Tottenham 4-0 in the midday kickoff at St. James’ Park to move into the top six, the listless Red Devils ended the day in seventh place in the top flight table, now trailing Newcastle on goal difference.
In a blоw to their chances of making it to Europe the following season, United has now lost all four of their league games. If West Ham defeats Fulham at the London Stadium on Sunday, they might fall as low as eighth.
In the Premier League era, the record 20-time English top-flight champions have only once finished lower than sixth place. During a miserable 2013–14 campaign, in which David Moyes, Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, was fired in April and Ryan Giggs took over temporarily, they dropped to seventh place, their lowest finish since 1990.
After yet another forgettable showing against Bournemouth, Ten Hag was asked if he felt United will be above that this season. Frustrated, he stood up and replied, “I don’t comment on that question.”
“That is not important for this moment.”
Following the press conference at Vitality Stadium—which you can watch at the conclusion of the video at the top of this page—Ten Hag then left the venue.
