In the Barclays Center on Sunday night, LeBron James came close to setting a new record.
James scored 40 points and made an almost flawless 9 of 10 from beyond the arc to help the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Brooklyn Nets 116-104. His season high of 40 points and his all-time personal best of nine made 3-pointers were both achieved.
It wasn’t as efficient as the first time he accomplished the feat, but it still didn’t break his record. James was 9 out of 14 from behind the arc during the particular period last season against the Los Angeles Clippers.
James has now become just the second player in Lakers history to make nine 3-pointers in a single game on four separate occasions; Kobe Bryant accomplished this feat four times during his career. Nonetheless, James is the first player to make all nine 3-pointers while shooting 90% from three-point range.
James finished with forty points, seven rebounds, five assists, and 13 of 17 field goals.
On Sunday, the Lakers jumped out to an early lead and maintained it the whole game. Before taking a 21-point lead after the first 12 minutes of play, they actually started the game on a lengthy 17-0 run and kept the Nets scoreless for more than half of the first quarter. It was easy sailing to the 12-point victory after then.
Following the game, James—who is in his 21st season in the league—made a hint about the end of his career.
James responded, “Not very long,” when asked how long he would play. “Obviously, I’m on the other side of the heel. I will not play for another twenty-one years, no question about it. Not a long time. I’m not sure when that door will close in terms of my retirement, but I’m running out of time.”
Rui Hachimura ended with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Anthony Davis added 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers while shooting 9 of 12 from the field. The Lakers’ five starting players all scored in double figures, while their lone bench point of the game came from Gabe Vincent’s one-and-only field goal.
Mikal Bridges finished with 13 points and four assists despite shooting just 3-of-11 from outside the arc, while Cam Thomas led the Nets with 30 points in the defeat. The Nets’ three-game winning streak was ended by the defeat, which dropped their season total to 29-46. They are 5.5 games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the final postseason place in the Eastern Conference standings. All of the teams that are ranked lower than the Nets have already been eliminated from the postseason race.
Following the victory, James and the Lakers have a 42-33 record, placing them seventh in the Western Conference rankings. With seven games remaining in the regular season, they lead the Golden State Warriors by two games in the standings.
