Ten instances of abuse were reported to prosecutors by La Liga last season; the 23-year-old was most recently the target of racist taunts from Atletico Madrid supporters prior to a Champions League match against Inter Milan.
During a news appearance, Vinicius Jr. broke down in tears and said that the continuous racism he encounters in Spain is causing him to lose motivation to play football.
The Real Madrid winger was obviously upset when questioned about the ongoing bigotry he has had to deal with in the Spanish league, ahead of an international friendly between Brazil and Spain.
Ten of these occurrences from the previous season were referred to prosecutors by La Liga; the 23-year-old was most recently the target of racial taunts from Atletico Madrid supporters prior to a Champions League match against Inter Milan.
Additional incidents of abuse included racial epithets directed at the football player during a Valencia match in May, and a supporter at a Sevilla game who was accused of making a monkey motion towards him.
In January 2023, four persons were fined €60,001 (£51,400) and banned from stadiums for two years for hаnging an effigy of Vinicius Jr. close to Real Madrid’s training ground.
The Brazilian, who has been widely criticized in Spain for speaking out against racism, disclosed the emotional tоll it has taken on him on Monday.
“I just want to play football but it’s hard to move forward,” Vinicius Jr. said, unable to talk through his tears. My desire to play is waning [because of the racist taunts].
“I never considered leaving Spain because doing so would give the racists exactly what they want,” the author said.
“I’m staying so that racists can keep seeing my face more and more.” Many people find it оffensive that I am a daring player who plays for Real Madrid and that we consistently win championships.”
Earlier this month, Real Madrid lodged a complaint with the Spanish legal authorities, claiming that Vinicius Jr. was the target of “racist and hateful insults” from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona supporters.
After Vinicius Jr. was sent off in the May game against Valencia due to racist taunts, the winger experienced an outpouring of support that sparked numerous national and worldwide campaigns against racism.
The “One Skin” anti-racism campaign will be featured during Tuesday’s friendly between Brazil and Spain at Santiago Bernabeu in Real Madrid.
