Andre Onana has expressed to the club’s media his improved sense of belonging in Manchester after a challenging first period at Old Trafford.
The Cameroonian footballer is certain that he will continue to perform well after achieving his eighth clean sheet in the Premier League this season. This places him second only behind Arsenal’s David Raya, who has achieved nine clean sheets. It is becoming evident why Erik ten Hag chose him as the main candidate to replace David de Gea last summer.
Onana, who is 27 years old, made some costly errors at the start of the season. However, his performances have shown great improvement after his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Naturally, it is expected that any newly signed player would need some time to adapt to their new environment. It is important to acknowledge the immense challenges faced by Onana, who, as a goalkeeper, has had to constantly adjust to playing in front of a different defensive lineup each week owing to the injuries incurred by Ten Hag’s team during the season.
For any goalkeeper, it would be a top priority to have a stable defensive line consisting of four players.
Following his crucial saves in United’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, Onana conversed with MUTV and disclosed his proficiency in speaking different languages to communicate with his defense.
“I speak quite a lot, I think four,” Onana said. The languages I speak are Spanish, Italian, English, and French. Despite my English proficiency being average, I strive to provide my best effort. It is crucial for me to have the ability to communicate with every individual in the team.
“I communicate with Licha in Spanish, which is beneficial for me. When I converse with Rapha [Varane], I use French. Occasionally, I make errors when speaking French words while conversing in English.”
Onana expressed his appreciation for being able to speak many languages throughout the game, stating that it is a pleasant experience to have a variety of languages in his repertoire. Playing with these individuals is a source of immense pleasure, and I feel a deep sense of pride to be in their company.
Regarding the game, Onana said that it was a crucial victory for the Reds as we want to end the season with strength and secure a position in the top four.
“I am experiencing a strong sense of well-being and joy as a result of the victory.” This game had great significance for our team, as every match now has immense importance for us.
“They are all similar to a final exam.” I am pleased that our defensive strategy was strong, as we consistently shown courage in facing a formidable adversary.
“Particularly in the first half, we initiated our оffensive moves from our defensive line, and that is precisely what we accomplished. I am pleased with the goals we scored.” Now we must prepare ourselves for the next games.
The goalkeeper also expressed gratitude towards the supporters for their unwavering support despite the challenging beginning at the club, and emphasized that there are other improvements still to be made.
“There are additional things to come, a significant amount more to come. It has taken me a duration of seven months to feel content in Manchester,” he supplemented.
“I am also extremely pleased with the assistance provided by everyone, as it was a challenging period initially.”
“Since my arrival, I have been receiving significant support from the fans, my teammates, and the club, which has greatly improved my current state.” I am really elated and certain that the future has great promise.
