The Los Angeles Times reports: Anthony Davis scored the final basket in overtime for the Lakers, and with a 134-131 victory on Thursday night, the Washingtоn Wizards extended their losing streak to thirteen games.
LeBron James contributed to the Lakers’ ninth victory in twelve games with 31 points and a crucial three-pointer in overtime. Despite falling behind a struggling opponent, the Lakers were unable to draw away. James is currently nine points away from matching the 40,000-scoring mark set by an NBA player in history.
Despite this encouraging effort against the Lakers, Jordan Poole scored a season-high 34 points and Marvin Bagley III added a season-high 23 for the Wizards, who are three losses away from matching the longest drought in franchise history. With two turnovers and five failed attempts in overtime, Washingtоn was unable to score in the final 3:50 minutes.
Kyle Kuzma, a former Lakers forward, finished with 20 points but failed to make a tying three-point attempt with eight seconds remaining in overtime. Additionally, Corey Kispert scored 20 points for Washingtоn.
The Wizards rallied from a fourth-quarter eight-point deficit to take the lead for the majority of the first three quarters. Poole drained his fifth 3-pointer of the evening to give Washingtоn a 126-124 lead with 43 seconds remaining in overtime. However, Austin Reaves knotted the game for Los Angeles with a fadeaway shot.
Poole failed to make a regulation-time 31-foot putter.
James returned to the court against Washingtоn within a night following his 19-point fourth quarter in the Lakers’ remarkable comeback victory over the Clippers, despite a chronically unstable ankle that forced him to miss two games around the All-Star break.
James, 39, is virtually certain to surpass 40,000 points against defending champion Denver on national television on Saturday.
D’Angelo Russell provided the Lakers with 22 points.
With an injured right pelvic, Wizards newcomer Bilal Coulibaly missed his second consecutive game, while Avdija returned from a three-game absence with a bruised left heel.
After logging four minutes in the first half for the Lakers, Cam Reddish was ruled out of the second half. An ankle ιnjury had sidelined him for five weeks prior to his return on Wednesday.
