One of the 14 games left in the LALIGA season could decide who wins the title. On Saturday night, Real Madrid beаt their closest foes, Girona, at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
The home team beаt the second-ranked team in the league 4-0, which was the biggest win for a league leader against a second-ranked team in the league on home turf since 1945, when Barcelona beаt Real Madrid 5-0.
This season, Girona has been LALIGA’s surprise gift. They were only two points behind Real Madrid going into this game, and they had only lost once, 3-0 to their foes at Estadi Montilivi in September.
The guests didn’t have a good chance in their most recent game because coach Míchel was banned from the sidelines after being sent off for protesting a referees call against Real Sociedad the previous weekend. Also, important playmaker Yangel Herrera and experienced defender Daley Blind were both not there because they were suspended for five yellow cards each.
That didn’t meаn Carlo Ancelotti didn’t have his own problems at Real Madrid, though. Because Antonio Rüdiger got hurt and couldn’t play, Italy didn’t have any healthy center defenders for this game.
In the end, Real Madrid’s defense didn’t have to worry about much because Girona didn’t even manage one shot on goal at the Bernabéu. Instead, Vinícius Júnior scored the first goal with a beautiful curling shot from the edge of the box after only six minutes.
Another great individual performance came from Rodrygo Goes, who scored goal number four by running through the Girona defense and curling the ball past goalie Paulo Gazzaniga. Joselu then missed a penalty kιck to make it five, hitting the post right before the end of the game.
What does this meаn for the race for the LALIGA title?
In terms of math, Girona is still very much in the game. They had only lost twice all season and only tied five times in 24 games. Those five points put them just behind Real Madrid, but still in the same amount of time.
In his Friday morning press meeting, Ancelotti said, “A win will only give us an advantage; the title will be decided later on.” But even the Italian must now be feeling a little hopeful.
The difference between the two teams is now five points, and Real Madrid has a commanding lead in the head-to-head matchup. Real Madrid beаt Girona 7-0, which is equal to another point in the table. The score includes both the home and away games.
There are still a few months left in the season, and Real Madrid is having their own problems with a lot of injuries on defense. There is still a lot to play for, but Real Madrid would have to really fall apart for them to lose the lead. They haven’t lost in LALIGA since September, when they lost to Atlético Madrid. They are now tied with Girona for most goals scored with 52, and they have given up six fewer goals than the next best defense in the tournament.
