CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) — The short-handed Charlotte Hornets were defeated 124-118 by the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Anthony Davis recorded 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists for his third career triple-double. D’Angelo Russell contributed 28 points. Lakers head coach Tyron Davis recorded his third consecutive victory.
The Lakers (27-25), who finished 4-2 on their road journey to gain much-needed momentum before the impending All-Star break, were bolstered by LeBron James’ 26 points.
The Hornets, who have lost eight consecutive games since Terry Rozier was traded to Miami, were led by Miles Bridges’ professional-high 41 points and newcomer Brandon Miller’s 33 points on five 3-pointers.
Russell and James combined for 22 points and 17 points for the Lakers (64% from the floor) in the first half, which gave them a 74-58 lead at halftime.
James had a number of highlight-reel moments in the first half, including a three-pointer over 7-foot center Nick Richards after driving past P.J. Washingtоn. Aside from another baseline drive that resulted in a lofty two-handed slam, James also assisted Anthony Davis on an alley-oop dunk.
Assisting the Lakers were 36 in number.
Christian Wood dunk-rebounding 3-pointers and dunking on a pass from Austin Reaves to increase Los Angeles’ lead to 21 points late in the third quarter.
However, the Hornets would trail by one game entering the fourth quarter, trailing Miller by 16 points. With approximately two minutes remaining, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft intercepted a Reaves pass and ran the length of the court for a dunk before converting back-to-back three-pointers to reduce the Lakers’ lead to four.
Charlotte came within a single possession of tying the game, but Bridges’ step-back 3-point attempt was deflected by Davis, and Reaves converted two free throws to extend the margin to six and secure the victory.
Bridges completed his fielding with five threes, going 16 for 26.
