On Saturday night against the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis made his return to action following a two-game absence due to a hip ιnjury.
After missing time, Davis was manifestly out of rhythm, as evidenced by his 12-point performance on 4-of-12 shooting. However, he contributed to the game in other ways, including 18 rebounds off the glass, five assists, one steаl, and four rejections.
Late in the game, when it was extremely close, Davis repeatedly delivered on the defensive end to help the Lakers secure the victory. There was a seven-minute span in the fourth quarter during which the Knicks failed to score. He discussed the impact he had on his team’s defense after the contest, as reported by Spectrum SportsNet:
“I do not operate as a unilateral actor. I have the ability to influence the game from both ends of the floor. That is precisely what I endeavored to accomplish. Despite the fact that I only attempted 12 goals, or something like that, (4 for 12), I still made an impression on the game on the defensive end. Therefore, it does not matter to me whether or not I score in order to contribute to our team’s victory. I am capable of accomplishing this on both ends of the floor; they are the strongest team in the league with nine consecutive wins. The fact that they came in here to receive a translation despite the fact that they were visibly understaffed was a significant victory for us. “We are simply attempting to maintain the momentum that those players gained in Boston.”
Davis continued by providing further details regarding his defensive responsibilities for this team, particularly in a challenging contest such as the Knicks when Jalen Brunson is performing at an elite level:
“Mently perusing. Observing who they have on the floor, the other three players who are not participating in the pick-and-roll, and conversing with them in order to determine whether or not I should assist the оffensive player. conversing with the me𝚗 and understanding their tendencies. I make every effort to facilitate the work of our personnel, particularly the guards, when they are blitzing or defending. This is particularly true by ensuring they have a comfortable location from which to apply pressure or blitz, and by directing them in a specific direction according to the coverage, with the knowledge that they have support on the back side. Therefore, that inspires confidence in them, knowing that I will return to that location and supervise the endeavor.
Particularly impressive was Davis’s return in transition, during which he blocked both Josh Hart and Brunson on the same possession. He described what he perceived in order to create those plays:
“I am making my mark on the game.” Merely safeguarding the border. That is precisely what I do… It is an innate inclination for me to pursue the ball when I observe it at the rim… As stated, I’m simply attempting to create plays. As Shot struggled offensively, he endeavored to make a defensive impact on the contest.
Davis has established himself as one of the league’s preeminent defenders and is among the select few players capable of dominating an entire game from that position.
However, he must maintain his health in order to sustain such an impact, which will be critical for the Lakers to reestablish themselves as contenders for the postseason.
Anthony Davis was named ninth-time All-Star.
Davis was selected for the 2024 NBA All-Star rosters for the ninth time in his career, as of the recent roster announcement. He will be accompanying LeBron James to Indianapolis, where he will be making his 20th consecutive start.
