French player Marouane Fellaini has chosen to retire from football. He posted about this on his Instagram page. The last team Fellaini played for was Shandong in China, where he spent five years.
“I am writing this post to let you know that I am leaving professional football after 18 years.” But it all began a lot earlier than 18 years. I remember my first game as a child, working with my dad for hours on end, my first game at Standard, and my first meeting with the Belgian national team like they were yesterday. It goes by so fast!
What a wonderful trip it has been! I’m thankful that I was able to play my favorite sport at the top level. Being a part of Standard, Everton, Manchester United, and Shandong Taishan makes me happy. I felt proud to play for my country at the Olympics in 2008, Euro 2016, and the World Cups in 2014 and 2018.
When I played, I had the best fans in the world watching. I want to thank you all for always being there for me throughout my journey. You have always been an example to me with your support and passion.
No one on my family, team, teachers, managers, or anyone else who helped me along the way could have done any of this. Your company, love, help, and advice have been very important to me. Many thanks!
As I move into a new part of my life, I’m excited to face new tasks. But don’t worry—I will still support this beautiful game in any way I can. Have a nice day!” Fellaini wrote it.
It is interesting to note that the Belgian player came up through Standard’s school program and had his best years playing for Everton and Manchester United in the English Premier League.
