Following a “disciplinary matter” that at least partially excused his absence from Manchester United’s FA Cup match against Newport County the day prior, Marcus Rashford resumed regular training on Monday.
On Sunday, England international Erik ten Hag ruled the player out of the 4-2 victory over Newport due to illness. Subsequent to his return to Manchester on Friday morning, it was alleged that Rashford called in ill after spending Thursday night at the Thompsons Garage nightclub in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before continuing the following day. The Guardian reports that Rashford was paying a visit to former United development counterpart Ro-Shaun Williams, who presently plays for Larne in Northern Ireland.
Manchester United chose to manage the situation internally and, on Monday, released a statement declaring that the matter was officially resolved. The decision enables Marcus Rashford to make his Premier League debut on Thursday against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Marcus has accepted responsibility for his actions,” The Athletic reports from the team statement. “This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed.”
The statement reflects ten Hag’s post-match remarks from Sunday, during which he cautiously assessed the situation.
“He disclosed that he was ill; the remainder is an internal matter,” stated the manager. “The matter is internal in nature. As stated, we shall address the matter. “I shall handle the situation.”
It is the most recent dispute regarding disciplinary matters between ten Hag and his squad, which has further compounded United’s inconsistent start to the season. Particularly noteworthy was the September dispute between the manager and Jadon Sancho, which was classified by the club as a “squad discipline issue.” Sancho trained independently for a number of months prior to his loan to Borussia Dortmund this month, after the club endorsed ten Hag’s claim; however, the player insisted he was being singled out.
This season, United and Ten Hag have taken a noticeably inconsistent approach to player discipline. In November, hours after the team’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City, Rashford was observed at a nightclub, where he received criticism from the manager but no punishment. Conversely, Antony Antony was suspended for less than a month subsequent to investigations being initiated in Brazil and the United Kingdom regarding the player’s alleged аssаult. Investigations continue to be conducted.
