The fact that the Lakers have achieved success in the early weeks and months of the season rather than floundering around indicates that their players possess valid arguments for consideration of All-League recognition and individual awards. Anthony Davis has the strongest case for the Defensive Player of the Year award early in the season for the Lakers.
Following the success of his postseason exploits, Davis has at last received the acknowledgment that has been long overdue this season.
This serves as the inaugural entry of a semi-regular column examining the Lakers’ standing about the most prestigious individual accolades. Although this may not occur on a weekly or even monthly basis, it is anticipated that we will revisit this topic on multiple occasions throughout the season, preferably towards the end of the regular season.
Let us examine a selection of the most prestigious accolades and the Lakers’ position in each of them.
Defensive Player of the Year
AD has been objectively dominant in the opposing team’s defensive zone. One common issue is that statistically, dominance and aptitude on the defensive end do not manifest themselves to the same extent as they do on the оffensive end; therefore, they do not command as much attention.
Davis, nevertheless, is finally receiving the acclaim he merits this season, whether using narrative or simply official recognition.
At this time, Rudy Gobert is the leading contender for the award, second only to AD. The Wolves, who possess one of the league’s best defenses, will be contenders for a variety of accolades.
It currently appears, however, that the award will be decided by two horses.
Sixth Man of the Year
Austin Reaves has the most favorable probability of receiving an award among the Lakers. His success since being realigned to the bench has not only benefited the team but also positioned him to be considered for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
This is an award whose contenders are not entirely apparent until the conclusion of the year; throughout the season, it fluctuates considerably. As an illustration, Russell Westbrook was among the early frontrunners for the championship a year ago, but his efforts were in vain.
At this juncture of the season, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Malik Monk currently comprise Reaves’ opposition; however, additional players and names may emerge.
The most valuable athlete
Currently, the most ambitious is LeBron James to win MVP. He has already been honored with one Most Valuable Player award this season, so it is unlikely that he will win another. Although he had a genuinely remarkable season, even when his age is disregarded, there are a multitude of reasons that are even more remarkable.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Nikola Jokic is the early favorite for MVP, with Luka Doncic nearby. Completing the top five are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Joel Embiid. Currently, AD has more favorable prospects than LeBron to win MVP, albeit both are extremely remote.
Clutch Player Award
Regarding the award that is virtually forgotten, LeBron also possesses a small possibility of success. Given his fourth-quarter performance thus far this season, he is currently in the running. This distinction is so incredibly subjective that it is difficult to identify the frontrunner.
Although LeBron is included in that group, Damian Lillard appears to be the favorite. Additionally, Tyrese Haliburton and SGA are contenders.
