Manchester United’s European campaign came to an end on Tuesday night as they were defeated at home by Bayern Munich, leaving Erik ten Hag’s team bottom of Champions League Group A.
United needed to win Tuesday’s group finals to have any hope of remaining in the competition after gaining just four points in their first five games.
However, a 1-0 loss saw the Red Devils finish fourth in a UCL group for the first time since 2005.
This was Manchester United’s weakest Champions League season to date. Manchester City has never collected less than six points in a group stage.
United also established an unwelcome new milestone by conceding 15 goals in six games, more than any Premier League club has ever surrendered in a UCL group.
Bayern had already clinched first place before traveling to Old Trafford, and it has been reported that manager Thomas Tuchel may rest several of his key players against United.
This was not the case, and a full-strength Bayern won deservedly courtesy to a 70th-minute goal from Kingsley Coman, who drove past Andre Onana from eight yards after a superb assist from Harry Kane.
Onana had previously been called upon to stop Kane and Joshua Kimmich’s attempts as United sought to remain in the contest.
United’s disappointing UCL season came to an end with Tuesday’s setback, despite taking the lead in three of the five group games that they failed to win.
United’s early departure from Europe may also make qualifying for next season’s Champions League more difficult.
It is feasible that five Premier League teams may qualify for the enlarged UCL in 2024/25, however, this is dependent on how well English clubs play in Europe this season.
