Drake and J. Cole square off in the latest music video for “First Person Shooter,” which was directed by Gibson Hazard, just a day after the duo announced their 2024 tour.
The image, which debuted on Wednesday afternoon, is a visual feast of CGI effects and meme culture allusions. The video opens in an office with Brian Baumgartner, better known as Kevin from the mockumentary sitcom “The Office,” using his work computer to play a first-person shooter game while listening to the track. When he gets a call from “The CEO,” he pretends that everyone is working hard at their workstations, but in actuality, Drake and J. Cole, his worker bees, are playing table tennis in a conference room.
In the course of the video, the rappers parody popular cultural moments such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess from their Louis Vuitton ad, as well as memes like Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man.
Drake also pays homage to Michael Jackson, performing a dance with a white glove on his right hand, because the No. 1 premiere of “First Person Shooter” on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart tied Drake with Jackson for the fourth-most No. 1 singles among all performers and the most among solo men with 13. Drake captioned a photo he had taken of Jackson wearing items from his company OVO with the hashtag #Mooooooooood and tagged J. Cole as soon as the news broke. When “First Person Shooter” arrived on the charts in October, it became J. Cole’s first and Drake’s thirteenth No. 1 song.)
